It is a place to convey the record and lessons of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the charm of Rikuzentakata.

What is Takatamatsubara Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park?
On the coast of Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture, there was a total of 70,000 pine forests “Takada Matsubara” that had been planted for about 350 years. It was popular as a scenic spot because of its beautiful pine forest, and at the same time it also played the role of a protection forest from tide. In addition, There was a beautiful beach where many people vivited for swimming in summer.
However, due to the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 that caused great damage not only in Iwate Prefecture but also in many places, most of the beautiful Takada Matsubara and sandy beaches have disappeared, and the landscape of Rikuzentakata has been greatly changed.
Currently, “Takatamatsubara Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park” is under development at that location with the goal of completing it in March 2021.
It is being developed to convey to the posterity the memorial record and lessons of the earthquake that must not be forgotten and the wish of requiem for the victims of the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
In the park, Remains of the earthquake disaster such as “Kisekino Ipponmatsu” are left, and there are the facilities:”Iwate Tsunami Memorial” which is the Great East Japan Earthquake Tsunami folklore museum and “Roadside station Takada Matsubara” which sells Rikuzentakata’s specialty products.

Roadside station Takada Matsubara
“Roadside station Takada Matsubara” is a facility that sells marine products and agricultural products of Rikuzentakata, special products of the Sanriku region, and processed products using them, etc.
Above all, “Hirota’s oysters” which is said to be traded at the highest price in Japan and scallops and wakame from Sanriku coast where is one of the world’s three great fishing grounds are exquisite!
You can enjoy the taste of Rikuzentakata on the spot at “Matsubara Shokudo” and “Takata no Gohan” where you can enjoy not only shopping but also dishes using Rikuzentakata’s food. Also, you can enjoy drinks and sweets at “Sunaba Coffee“
Iwate Tsunami Memorial
“Iwate Tsunami Memorial” is the Great East Japan Earthquake Tsunami Tradition Museum, which aims to share the facts and lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake with people all over the world and to realize a society that is resistant to natural disasters.
you can see the actual objects that were damaged by the disaster, as well as photographs that capture the scene of the disaster, so you can know the facts of the tsunami that occurred due to the Great East Japan Earthquake
Kisekino Ipponmatsu
Most of the 70,000 pine forests in Takada Matsubara were washed away by the tsunami. The only one that survived the tsunami was Kisekino Ipponmatsu.
Although it was confirmed dead in 2012 due to severe damage from seawater, but it has been preserved as a monument that symbolizes the recovery from the earthquake.
The old roadside station Takada Matsubara, “Tapic 45“, “Shimojuku Settlement Promotion House“, and “Kesen Junior High School” are also left as disaster remains.
Umiwonozomuba
Umiwonozomuba is a place where you can see the beautiful sea of Rikuzentakata.
The sea sometimes has a terrifying aspect that hurt people. However, it is a wonderful place where we can usually enjoy swimming and enjoy the seafood, etc.
I feel that we need to get along well with the sea.
